Modern Comenius items

The collection contains items which came about from the middle of the 19th century up to the present. It primarily consists of books and magazines as well as occasional musical cassettes and CDs and data media (CD-ROMs).

The majority of the collected items were published within the territory of today's Czech Republic but also includes items from various countries in Europe and the rest of the world (France, Italy, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, the Ukraine, Great Britain, China, Georgia, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Canada).

The collection fund was incorporated from the library of the district natural science institution of J. A. Comenius in Přerov in the year 1972, which also contained books from the original library of František Slaměník, the founder of the Museum. All of the items are linked to the life and work of J. A. Comenius, his predecessors, colleagues, and successors and on the history of Comenius science.

Items in the collection

Editions of the works of Comenius are an important part as are monographs on his life and work. Publications on the Czech Brethren, church reformers, museums and Comenius scrap books and selected Hussite titles are also part of the collections. Czech and foreign Comenius magazines or particular issues of other periodicals dedicated to Comenius are also an important part of the collections. The collection also contains publications dealing with Comenius' map of Moravia.

The collection contained 3,157 recorded items (registration numbers) in all in December 2015 and is supplemented by ongoing purchases of both new and older publications on Comenius.

Researchers make use of it, first and foremost, as a specialised Comenius library, items can only be looked at on site.

The collection is administered by Mgr. Helena Kovářová (Social Sciences Department).
