Historic book collections

The beginnings of this collectible fund were laid by František Slaměník who donated his personal library to the Museum. This grew through purchases, gifts by members and friends of the Museum.

Items in the collection

The collection contains both printed and hand-written documents from the 15th century up to the middle of the 19th century from Central and Western Europe and contains both Czech and foreign language literature primarily written in Czech and German. It contains literature dealing with religion, philosophy, history, linguistics, geography, natural science and farming.

Of particular interest is the collection of the original published works of J. A. Comenius as well as a collection of approximately 150 Bibles. The first edition of the treatise Schola ludus is completely unique. Also worthy of mention are the treatises by Martin Luther, Philipp Melanchthon, Czech Brethren hymn books (including the Ivančice or the Szamotuły) by Bartoloměj Paprocký Diadochus or the first Moravian chronicle of local names Zrcadlo slavného markrabství moravského (Mirror of the Renowned Moravian Mark).

Of particular interest in the manuscript collection, primarily from the 17th - 19th centuries, are the manuscripts and transcriptions of Kristian Kotter, Jiří Středovský or J. H. A. Gallaš.

As of December 2015, the collection contained 3,709 recorded items (registration numbers). Of assistance for work with the collection is a two-volume bibliographical inventory and CD-ROM, published in the year 2003 – Pumprla, Václav: List of the historical book funds in the Comenius Museum in Přerov.

The collection is administered by Mgr. Helena Kovářová (Social Sciences Department).
